How NYC Alert works
Radio traffic in, verified incident news out, with nobody pressing a publish button.
From the radio to your screen
- Listen. FDNY and NYPD dispatch channels for all five boroughs are transcribed as calls come in.
- Understand. An AI model trained on New York City radio reads each transmission: what happened, where, how serious, and whether it is the same job as one already published.
- Verify. Every claim in a headline must be backed by a literal quote from the radio. If it cannot be, it is not published.
- Follow the call. Headlines change as the incident does: reported, confirmed, all hands, second alarm, under control, units clearing. Each update says what changed.
- Place it. Spoken addresses and cross streets are geocoded. When only an FDNY alarm box is known, the map shows the box's area as a ring, never a false exact address.
Reading a card
- Category is the AI's editorial call: Routine (blue), Newsworthy (gold), Breaking (red), Funny or Weird / Unique (violet).
- Level (Breaking, Developing, Incident, Activity) comes from the public priority score, 1 to 5, scored separately from the category.
- Stage is where the call stands: reported, confirmed, escalated, contained, under control, clearing, closed. What changed is the one-line difference this update made.
- Location is only what the radio stated; "not stated clearly" means exactly that. An FDNY box is shown with the cross streets the department lists for it.
- Triage fit is the model's confidence that the copy is fully supported by the radio.
Feeds
- Public: free and anonymous. Newsworthy incidents, the live map and updates.
- Buff: more operational detail, more calls, earlier. Approved accounts.
- News media: assignment-desk ranking and sourcing for newsrooms. Approved accounts with a publication.
- Developers: the same data over a documented API and webhooks at api.nycalert.ai.
What NYC Alert is not
NYC Alert is not an emergency dispatch or public warning service. Call 911 for emergencies. Summaries are generated automatically and can be wrong; verify independently before acting or publishing.
