Questions
How do alerts work?
NYC Alert listens to public FDNY and NYPD radio, writes a short summary of each call with AI, checks it against the radio and publishes it as an incident card, usually within a minute or two. Cards are updated as the call develops. Summaries can be wrong or late; verify independently.
Notifications are not arriving
- iPhone Settings → Notifications → NYC Alert: Allow Notifications on; Time Sensitive Notifications on (for Breaking and Nearby alerts).
- A Focus mode (Do Not Disturb, Sleep) may hold notifications; allow NYC Alert in that Focus.
- In the app's notification settings: notifications on, and the boroughs, agencies, incident kinds and minimum level you want. Quiet hours make everything except Breaking silent.
- Use Send test notification in the app's Settings. If the test does not arrive, sign out and back in so your device registers again.
- Updates follow your "updates" choice (none, when the headline changes, or all).
Nearby alerts and location
Nearby alerts tell you about calls within the distance you choose, even outside your boroughs and levels. They need location permission ("Always" lets them work while the app is closed). We keep only your phone's latest point, rounded to about 11 meters, for at most 12 hours, and staff never see it. Turn Nearby alerts off in the app to stop sending location and delete the point. See the Privacy Policy.
Radio playback in the background
The app's live radio keeps playing when you lock the phone or switch apps; use the controls on the lock screen or in Control Center to stop it. If it stops, check that Low Power Mode is off and that another app did not take over the audio. On the website, keep the tab open.
Delete my account
In the app: Settings → Delete account (enter your password). It removes your account, devices, location points, settings and posts. Or email [email protected] from the address on the account. If you have Alert Plus through Apple, cancel the subscription in your iPhone's Settings too; deleting the account does not cancel Apple billing.
Alert Plus: restore or cancel
Restore: on a new iPhone, open Alert Plus in the app and tap Restore purchases while signed in to the same NYC Alert account and Apple ID. Cancel: iPhone Settings → your name → Subscriptions → NYC Alert; on the website, the Alert Plus page → Manage subscription. Plus stays on until the end of the period you paid for. Members of Service and NYC public servants can ask for Courtesy Plus in the app.
